The union representing workers of Mirror Indy, FPI News and Free Press Indiana

Our union has been voluntarily recognized

(Oct. 16, 2026)

INDIANAPOLIS — Free Press Indiana and the Indiana Local News Guild are pleased to announce that we have reached an agreement for voluntary recognition for newsroom employees at Mirror Indy and FPI News.

Under our agreement, a neutral third party has verified majority support for a union among newsroom employees. This process, called a “card check,” will allow the union and employer to move forward expeditiously with negotiations for a collective bargaining agreement.

Both parties are committed to ensuring that the bargaining process is conducted in good faith and centers the mutual best interests of our audience, our staff and Free Press Indiana.

“We’re excited and heartened by leadership’s willingness to recognize the will of their employees to unionize,” said Claire Rafford, Mirror Indy reporter and a union organizer. “We look forward to negotiating a fair contract that makes it possible for workers at Mirror Indy and FPI News to continue to thrive.”

“We look forward to working through this process, and to continuing our focus on serving Indianapolis and the state of Indiana by delivering timely, relevant news,” said Bro Krift, FPI’s Chief Executive Officer.

The Indiana Local News Guild will work with Free Press Indiana leadership moving forward to negotiate a union contract.
